That's why we've been thrilled to sponsor Smart Touring Systems as they embarked on an exciting project: restoring an iconic 1985 FJ62 60 Series Land Cruiser, purchased at auction and transforming it into something extraordinary.
Week after week, we've watched the build unfold with custom additions and expert craftsmanship. As specialists in supplying hard-to-find 4x4 genuine or aftermarket parts suitable for 60 Series LC, including older Landcruiser 60 series parts, we've loved supporting this project and seeing incredible progress!
All Four x 4 Spares delivered several new and used parts to the project. From blinkers, taillights, windscreen wipers, rear view mirrors, quality used 70 series transfer case to adapt to the 4 speed auto of the 4JJ1 Dmax motor that is under the bonnet and more!
If you are considering a similar 60 series Landcruiser restoration, you may want to know what year makes and models are currently available on the market here in Australia along with a brief history.
Let's skip to the end...the full 60 Series build done in 35 minutes!
When did the Landcruiser 60 Series arrive in Australia?
The Landcruiser 60 Series made its mark in Australia in the early 1980s, quickly earning a reputation for ruggedness and reliability.
A popular choice for off-road enthusiasts and adventurers, the 60 Series came in several models, including the FJ60 and FJ62, powered by petrol engines, and the HJ60 and HJ61, which featured durable diesel engines. Known for their versatility and strength, these models have become iconic in the 4WD community, with many still in service today, making them a favourite for restoration projects like the one with Smart Touring Systems.
The restoration journey
This modified 60 Series Landcruiser build project went through several phases, from the moment of purchase at auction to the final video result. We have shared some of those moments.
Rust Repair
In the first part of the rust repair journey on Lazarus (the name of this new 60 Series Land Cruiser), Adam and the crew dived headfirst into the bodywork and, unsurprisingly, encountered a few unwelcome surprises. Rust repair is no small task, especially when tackling it alone. However, the team managed it well. It's the beginning of a massive transformation!
Paint Job
They're full steam ahead on prepping Lazarus, the Toyota 60 Series Land Cruiser, for a brand-new paint job. The bodywork seems never-ending at times, but all the hard work will pay off when the final result comes to life. With each step, their transformation is shaping into something extraordinary!
Bodywork Panels
The team have put in a massive effort to document every gritty detail of the bodywork. In this episode, the team dives deep into making the panels and shapes look like they just rolled off the factory floor. It puts into perspective the amount of work to achieve show-quality perfection. With each step, they continue to push the build to new heights, transforming Lazarus into something truly representative of STS Garage, all while having a blast.
Cutting the Rust
Around the entire edge of Lazarus' roof, the rust has completely eaten through underneath. While it would've been easy to buy a new roof, they preferred to tackle challenges head-on and do things the hard way. So, they began cutting out the rust in sweltering 35Ā° heat and 100% humidity. Bodywork at this level is not for the faint-hearted!
Batteries
The team has installed the latest lithium battery technology here: two ultra-slim 120amp lithium batteries in the 60 Series and two slimline 200amp lithium batteries in the new 79 Series (STS's other rig). Each setup will have unique charging systems and uses, making for some exciting upgrades.
Roof time
Lazarus, has officially taken a step back from the grave! After an intense roof restoration, the repairs are finally complete.
They ended up cutting off the entire edge of the roof, removing the gutter, repairing the inner structure, sandblasting, adding brackets for a custom roof rack, spot welding the gutter back on, and crafting new patches to replace the edge.
The final touch? Body filler and endless sanding.
New Bar
The 60 Series is getting a new rear bar! Crafting it from 5mm plate steel requires creativity, patience, and plenty of time with the angle grinder and welder. It's a labour of love that will enhance both functionality and aesthetics as the custom piece is brought to life.
Winch
The 60 Series receives a Carbon Offroad Scout Pro 12000 winch (supplied by All Four x 4 Spares), which requires some customisation to fit just right.
This meant cutting into the front of the vehicle to allow the front bar to sweep back under the front quarters and align perfectly with the front tyre.
Most panels are now primed, and the search for a donor vehicle to source an engine is heating up!
Modifying the New Front Bar
After thoughtful consideration, they decided the new front bar needed to wrap around the front quarters a bit more, especially since it required modifications for the new winch.
So, after making some cuts to the car and a bit of custom fabrication work, they're pleased with how it turned out. It looks pretty mint!
New Donor Motor and Engine Conversion
They finally purchased a crashed vehicle at auction for a donor motor for Lazarus!
It was specifically purchased for its engine. It can be a bit nerve-wracking buying something sight unseen, especially not knowing if the engine will even start.
But with the old motor now out and the paint job underway, they're ready to dive into the engine conversion process!
Another big piece of the puzzle (and yes, there are many pieces) has been delivered right to their door from us at All Four x 4 Spares. Prepping the body has been a monstrous task, but now they're finally starting the paint job, along with the engine conversion. With a tight deadline to complete everything by early October for Mr. Landcruiser CLECS 2024 - Classic Landcruiser Expo & Car Show, the pressure is on, but the excitement is palpable as they move forward!
The 60 Series engine conversion begins: 4jj1 Isuzu motor install into Lazarus the 60 series.
The new 4JJ1 D-Max engine
This moment absolutely called for a celebratory beer after successfully turning the key on Lazarus' new 4JJ1 D-Max engine! The thrill of hearing that engine roar to life is a milestone worth celebrating, marking a significant step forward in the restoration journey. Cheers to new beginnings and all the hard work that brought Lazarus back to life!
We're at the final stages of the 60 Series Landcruiser build, and the little details are making this project come togetherālike the new taillight replacing the broken one! The paintwork is complete, but now the real work begins with a trillion bits and pieces still to reassemble. Another part is supplied by All Four x 4 Spares, which we are proud to consistently have exactly what the team needs and our unwavering support throughout the builds!
Lazarus is Alive!
Lazarus the 60 series has put up a fight, but they have made it. The team has finally got to piece all the bits together.
Final Reveal!
