Water Temperature Sensor / Sender Unit Toyota Landcruiser 1/1975-12/1997 and Hilux from 8/1978 to 7/1997.
This is the engine coolant temperature sensor which sends a signal to the instrument cluster / dash so the vehicle operator can monitor the coolant temperature.
It is located either directly in the head of the engine or the thermostat housing which is also attached to the head.
